How to Find Us

Our office is above Swords into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, adjacent to and run by Central United Method Church, at 33 East Adams / Detroit, MI 48226.

Our office is at the corner of Woodward and Adams street, downtown. The address is in the front of the building, but parking and entrance is in back (off of Elizabeth). Below is a screenshot of a map indicating where the parking lot is (it’s by the “P” off Elizabeth, between Witherell and Woodward), and a photo of what you’ll be looking at when you’ve successfully parked in the right spot.

Parking

There is typically free parking available in the lot for events and services provided Monday through Thursday. The entrance to the lot is gated, and there is a sign stating you must pay to park. If you are attending an in-person service or event for Inner Justice Works, just let the parking lot attendant know, and your parking will be free. There are occasional times when the lot is not available, in which case, we will notify you in advance of our in-person event or appointment time, so you can budget extra time for parking downtown (there are meters that must be paid Monday – Saturday, and rates usually range from $1.50 – $4).

If you can’t get into the lot…

On occasion, you may be invited to meet for sessions at the office, and find that the entrance to our parking lot is not staffed by an attendant who is able to lift the arm to let you in through the gate. This is because the church that we rent from pays for a lot attendant, and they do not always have someone available. This will result in you being stuck and unable to enter the lot. When this happens, it’s best to wait near the empty booth (actually idling your vehicle in the driveway is fine, if there is no one coming in behind you) and call or text your clinician, who can then meet you outside with a swipe pass, to let you into the lot. It’s also, of course, fine to simply pay for parking elsewhere, if that feels more convenient to you, and you would prefer not to wait. We will do our best to let you know when the lot is unstaffed, but sometimes we may not realized with enough time to give advanced notice.

We don’t have a waiting room 😦

What this means is that your clinician will need to greet you at the door to our office, to let you inside. That means if you’re planning to arrive early, you may have to wait in your car or outdoors nearby until we’re ready to greet you and let you in.

In some cases, we may be able to meet you at the office early to let you inside, and/or sometimes staff at the church are present and able to help. For the most part, however, plan to arrive on time and not early, so you’re not stuck waiting in the elements. It’s also true that we are downtown, and that the church we share space with often serves other community members (they host a rotating shelter program, soup kitchen, and other survival support services), so there’s a good chance you may find yourself waiting outside with others, who are here for unrelated services, if you do end up arriving early and choose to wait near the door to our entrance. This is totally okay by us, but not everyone feels comfortable interacting with members of the public while they wait for clinical sessions, so it’s good to be aware and plan ahead!

Also, please note that the doorbell to our office makes a terrible sound! It’s not a disaster if you end up ringing it, but we generally much prefer that you call or text your assigned clinician to let us know you’ve arrived, instead of using the doorbell. This also prevents the person who may be ahead of you from a surprising and loud buzz at the end of their session!

We aren’t ADA Compliant 😦

A limitation of our current office space is that it’s not accessible (it’s upstairs– 14 of them– and there is no way to access it without going up the stairs. Bathrooms are also small with narrow doorways that may not accommodate all access needs). We are often able to schedule private space in the downstairs area for clients who need in-person services and can’t do stairs; however, we recognize this isn’t ideal, and we may move to an office in the same building that is more accessible, when one becomes available.

…but, we’ll do our best to adapt for you!

For many of our clients who find our office space inaccessible (for reasons related to physical ability, transportation, schedule needs, or any others), we sometimes are able to meet for sessions offsite, whether at your home or in the community. We can also often schedule time to meet privately on the main floor of our space, when the gallery is not in use, which has no steps for entry or exit. There’s a first floor bathroom in the gallery; however, it has very narrow doorways and is generally a cramped space, which will make it inaccessible for some folks. Telehealth is, of course, always an option for anyone who wants to use it.

TLDR – We’re not perfect, but are aware of and working on our shortcomings. We want to be more accessible, and we know we aren’t there yet. Let’s talk about your access needs and see if we can work something out!
